TCG Interview #19: I AM CHAMPION

I spoke with the creators of I AM CHAMPION- here are their answers to my questions:

Q: Please describe your trading card game!

A: We created a game that even non-trading card gamers can understand and enjoy. So people who play TCG’s can play with friends and family who are not really into them. Maybe they will like it and be more willing to play more advanced games like MTG.

This game is simple to learn and super fun to play.

Let's BEGIN:

Players can decide how long the game will be by choosing between a 5, 10 or 15 card battle.

Here you can either SHUFFLE your deck for a fun random champion battle or plan your attack by placing them in order, that's up to you and your opponent.

With your deck of Champions faced down, each player draws their Champion from the top of the deck and places the card faced up in front of them at the same time on the table.

Read the card and ability out load, so your opponent knows what awesome attack is coming their way.

Each Champion is equipped with an ATTACK, a DEFENSE and a rad ABILITY. Some Champions have two abilities to choose from, you can only choose one. Some champions have a two dice roll, while other may not need a dice roll at all. You must pick which ability you want to use before the match starts.

Both players now play out their ability, roll the dice if the ability requires.

If the ability and attack don't drop either players health below zero, you enter MELEE mode! Here you will use the DIE to roll for attack. Whoever's defense reaches zero or has the least defense overall, loses. If each player reaches below zero with the same defense, its becomes a ROLL-OFF! Then whichever player has the higher number rolled WINS.

The winner of the battle places their Champion in the REVIVE POD area, while the defeated Champion is placed in the GRAVEYARD.

After the all the cards have been played, the remaining Champions in the REVIVE POD are REPLAYED against your opponents remaining champions. Battle until all your champions or your opponents champions are all defeated.

The player with at least one Champion remaining, wins!

In party mode players roll the dice to see who goes first, and the winner of each round chooses the next opponent they want want to challenge.

Q: What inspired you to create a TCG?

A: As kids we, Josh and Jessie, loved to play Magic the Gathering and Pokémon back in the 90’s

As we wanted to create a game using our art skills and decided it would be perfect to make a trading card game.

We wanted something easy to play that anyone can learn and enjoy. Something parents who grew up with TCG’s can play with their kids and family. A party game for gatherings.

Q: What TCGs did you grow up playing as a kid?

A: We started playing Magic the Gathering in 1997 when we were about 12 years old and then when Pokémon came out started playing that, more for collecting though.

Q: What sets I AM CHAMPION apart from other TCGs?

A: It is a chance based game with some strategy. It does not play like a traditional TCG. People have described it like war with dice. Each card holds more value because there’s no fluff like land/element cards, sorceries or artifacts. Just straight CHAMPIONS. You also play one card vs. another card at a time. The dice roll really levels the playing field as beginners can still beat people who have been playing a long time.

Q: How long have you been working on the game?

A: For the past year.

Q: How did you come up with the name I AM CHAMPION?

A: It’s funny. Most names we went through didn’t fit, and one day I was listening to the band CONAN, and I remembered I used to think an opening lyric they have was “I am Champion”, but later realized he said Iron Chariot!  hahaha. I always thought I am Champion sounded cool and it really fit because we have cards called Champions. Weird how the name came about, makes a funny story!

Q: What is the illustration/design process

 like?

A: Jessie, the artist, uses an IPad Pro and Apple Pencil in the program Procreate. He lets his mind just flow on paper in his own unique style. A lot of inspiration comes from his love of the late 80’s early 90’s cartoons and games at that time. That’s how he gets his retro look.

Q: What are your future plans for I AM CHAMPION?

A: We hadn’t to release 300 champions a year in seasons. We also have 2 versions of story mode that you can “plug” your Champions into to we are almost finished developing. These can be played solo or as co-op games. We also want to release a retro, streetfighter/mortal combat meets Pokémon style game for online play and retro consoles. Like Game boy, SNES, and SEGA Genesis. We also really want to make a cheesy live action show based around the characters like The Origional Power Rangers! That would be a lot of fun!

Q: Will you be at any upcoming conventions?

A: We will have a booth at the L.A. Comic-Con this December, and plan on being at many more including Collect-A-Con in Denver next year.

Q: Do you have any advice for someone looking to make their own TCG?

A: Yes! Be creative, unique, and don’t listen to people who talk trash about your game! We get a lot of slack because of how different and easy our game is. Just do it!!!

TCG Interview #90: Ward (Part 2)

I did a follow-up interview with Ward TCG, here are their answers to my questions! Q:  What’s new with Ward TCG since our previous interview? A: A lot has happened in the year since our last interview. Ward has hosted a dozen tournaments with great turnouts, lots of action, and many new players.    We have attended several conventions with the most recent being the HUGE Midwest gaming Classic in Milwaukee WI. The original actors from resident Evil 1 video game hung out at our booth for a while and were enamored with Ward.    We are in about 2 dozen stores, including a partnership with a Midwest convenience store chain “Luckey Seven”. They fell in love with Ward and have begun to spread it in their 37 stores across the Midwest.    We were invited to be on several interviews with ABC News. They also loved Ward and wanted to help promote an upcoming tournament we had in Minneapolis MN at that time. Being on Live TV was very nerve racking. We were also hosted by PBS for a short segment cal

TCG Interview #12: Neo Gambit

I spoke with the creator of Neo Gambit- here are his answers to my questions: Q: Please describe your trading card game! A: NeoGambit is a fast paced and easy to play deck building combat TCG. Q: What inspired you to create a TCG? A: This came from a dream. I woke up from a nap and had dreamt of this fun TCG, reminded me of how much fun I had as a kid play card games. As a kid I spent hours playing games, but mostly alone, a lot of rules and effects for cards were off putting to others around me. So from my dream, NeoGambit was birthed. A simple fun TCG that literally anyone can play. Q: What TCGs did you grow up playing as a kid? A: My earliest memories are intertwined with TCGs, there wasn’t a moment in my childhood that I didn’t collect cards. Yugioh and Pokémon have been in my life as long as I can remember. I collected both Pokémon and yugioh for over 15 years. I also collected other TCGs over the years, my favorite being chaotic, I’d say that’s where most inspiration for the gam
