TCG Interview #27: DX Monsters

I spoke with the creator of DX Monsters- here are his answers to my questions:

Q: Please describe your trading card game!

A: DX Monsters is an epic, fun TCG that offers challenging strategic gameplay for older players while maintaining simple gameplay mechanics for younger players. Players battle it out with monsters, spells and equip cards. DX Monsters has a 3 shield system. 3 cards are drawn from the top of the players deck and placed face down in the Shield Zone at the start of the game. If a Player loses all 3 shields in battle the Player is no longer protected. Their opponent must Zone the Player one final time to win. DX Monsters has a Zone and Bench system that allows players to damage opponent monsters and/or destroy opponent monsters. Initial Monster attacks trigger the Bench mechanic and secondary Monster attacks, on the same Monster, trigger the Zone mechanic. Q: What inspired you to create your own TCG?

A: Growing up playing and collecting TCG games sparked the initial desire to create our own TCG together. Adam, the game designer, grew up creating games to play with his brothers and friends. One of those games was DX. Shortly after meeting, we decided to work on a project together. I have a background in Illustration and with Adam's game design experience it made sense to work on a game project. He brought the idea to the table to work on a TCG that he started when he was younger. Together we created what is now DX Monsters.

Q: What TCGs did you play growing up as a kid?

A: Yu-gi-oh, Magic The Gathering, Pokemon, and a little of Dragon Ball.

Q: What sets DX Monsters apart from other TCGs?

A: DX Monsters is easy, simple, and fun for new TCG players; while offering enough challenge and strategic gameplay for players who have experience in playing TCGs. We strive to offer simple yet dynamic gameplay for TCG players. This is a priority of ours as we continue to grow and evolve DX Monsters.

Q: How did you come up with the name DX Monsters?

A: It was initially called DX Masters when Adam developed the game in his early teenage years. Together we elevated the game and lore, building a world and story around Dimension X Monsters (DX Monsters).

Q: How long have you been working on the game?

A: Together we've been working on DX Monsters since 2019, but 2022 is its first year released. DX Monsters, Season 1,  launched at the beginning of 2022.

Q: What is the illustration/design process like?

A: Adam comes up with the basic designs for the monsters/spells/equips along with their effects and what they do; I then take his designs and add my skill set  by elevating the designs. I work mainly in Clip Studio. I start with the initial sketch, referencing the initial design thinking about how I can make it more dynamic. Once I have a sketch I'm happy with, I complete the inks, flats, light/shadow and details. Once the character/monster is complete, then I complete a background design or pattern.

Q: What are your future plans for DX Monsters?

A: So far, we have 5 seasons set up with great and crazy things coming in between them. We're almost done with Season 1 and about to start on Season 2. We're currently estimating 2024 Season 2 release.

Q: Will you be at any upcoming conventions?

A: We have a Demo coming up at the card shop Boardwalk in Greenville, SC on January 7. We currently plan to return to conventions such as XCon in Myrtle Beach, SC and Heroes Con in Charlotte, NC in 2023. To stay up-to-date on what events we'll be attending next or where our Demos are taking place, join our mailing list.

Q: Do you have any advice for someone looking to make their own TCG?

Make games that you want to play. Don't compare your game to others or feel that your TCG isn't good enough. Work on it, test it with players and improve it. If you believe in what you're creating and enjoy playing it yourself, then you really can't lose.

Q: What inspired you to create a TCG? A: This came from a dream. I woke up from a nap and had dreamt of this fun TCG, reminded me of how much fun I had as a kid play card games. TCG Interview #90: Ward (Part 2)

I did a follow-up interview with Ward TCG, here are their answers to my questions! Q:  What’s new with Ward TCG since our previous interview? A: A lot has happened in the year since our last interview. Ward has hosted a dozen tournaments with great turnouts, lots of action, and many new players.    We have attended several conventions with the most recent being the HUGE Midwest gaming Classic in Milwaukee WI. The original actors from resident Evil 1 video game hung out at our booth for a while and were enamored with Ward.    We are in about 2 dozen stores, including a partnership with a Midwest convenience store chain “Luckey Seven”. They fell in love with Ward and have begun to spread it in their 37 stores across the Midwest.    We were invited to be on several interviews with ABC News. They also loved Ward and wanted to help promote an upcoming tournament we had in Minneapolis MN at that time. Being on Live TV was very nerve racking. We were also hos...
