TCG Interview #46: Oversoul

I spoke with the creator of Oversoul- here are his answers to my questions:

Q: Please describe your trading card game!
A: Oversoul is a battle card game set in an afterlife known as the soul realm. Players take on the role of a shaman that has a sixth sense to summon souls from the soul realm and cast spells. The game combines aspects that I enjoy from other games and tries to put a twist to them.

Q: What inspired you to create your own TCG?
A: I had always had an interest in card games as a child and whenever I would watch shows like Yu-Gi-Oh. or Duel Masters I can remember sitting down and drawing my own cards for those games. When cardfight vanguard was released in NA I got into creating my own card game manga with my own game but it wasn't until i discovered a youtuber known as CardsAtHome that really motivated me and made me say "hey i can do that too!".

Q: What TCGs did you grow up playing as a kid?
A: Growing up I played a lot of Yu-gi-oh and some Pokemon. Yu-gi-oh was my main game for a while until Cardfight Vanguard was released and I had rediscovered and fell in love with duel masters when it got rebooted as Kaijudo. I did play a bit of mtg in highschool but I wasn't too big of a fan.

Q: What sets Oversoul apart from other TCGs?
A: The game utilizes different forms of resources that may be a little weird to new players but makes it interesting to veteran card game players. It makes the pacing of the game a little different depending on what you choose to do. If you want to focus on souls the game would be slower but if you want to focus on spells more it becomes faster with the ability to combo off.

Q: How did you come up with the name Oversoul?
A: I have an interest in the supernatural, spiritualism, religion, etc so Oversoul does have a meaning and I feel like it is something that loosely fits the theme of the game.

Q: How long have you been working on the game?
A: I started making the game in 2016 and it went through a lot of different iterations.

Q: What is the illustration/design process like?
A: With card design, I do have a set story in mind for what I create and I base it on that. In terms of the art, it is all just spur of the moment and it all just comes out. I don't really like to force it because I believe that if you don't love what you are doing at the moment it won't be as good when you do.

Q: What are your future plans for Oversoul?
A: There are a lot of story related things that I have planned for Oversoul and luckily I now have a group of people helping me with it. Game design is a form of art and art is a form of expression so I hope that everyone will enjoy the art that i'm creating.

Q: Will you be at any upcoming conventions?
A: As much as I want to, I have no current plans to go to any upcoming conventions at this moment.

Q: Do you have any advice for someone looking to make their own TCG?
A: Yes! Never listen to advice that tells you a game has to be a certain way. Create the game that you want even if it isn't super original. as long as you are happy with what you are making you'll have a lot of fun doing it.

Q: What inspired you to create a TCG? A: This came from a dream. I woke up from a nap and had dreamt of this fun TCG, reminded me of how much fun I had as a kid play card games. TCG Interview #90: Ward (Part 2)

I did a follow-up interview with Ward TCG, here are their answers to my questions! Q:  What’s new with Ward TCG since our previous interview? A: A lot has happened in the year since our last interview. Ward has hosted a dozen tournaments with great turnouts, lots of action, and many new players.    We have attended several conventions with the most recent being the HUGE Midwest gaming Classic in Milwaukee WI. The original actors from resident Evil 1 video game hung out at our booth for a while and were enamored with Ward.    We are in about 2 dozen stores, including a partnership with a Midwest convenience store chain “Luckey Seven”. They fell in love with Ward and have begun to spread it in their 37 stores across the Midwest.    We were invited to be on several interviews with ABC News. They also loved Ward and wanted to help promote an upcoming tournament we had in Minneapolis MN at that time. Being on Live TV was very nerve racking. We were also hos...
