TCG Interview #47: Kaiju Deep

I spoke with the creator of Kaiju Deep- here are his answers to my questions:

Q: Please describe your trading card game!

A: Kaiju Deep TCG is a kaiju monster battle game! You build your city and summon your Kaiju to defend your home against other invading Kaiju and humans!

Q: What inspired you to create your own TCG?

A: I’ve been a comic creator all my life and I love creating characters! I create more characters in one day than most people create in their lifetime. I wanted to find a way to give those characters a home and place to get into the world.  I already have hundreds of Kaiju waiting to appear in the game.  Unfortunately, there isn’t enough time in the day to make comics for all the characters I create so when I came upon Gem Blenders it connected some dots for me and I was like OMG I can create a game that allows me to get all these characters out into the world!

Q: What TCGs did you grow up playing as a kid?

A: I think my experiences were pretty typical… Yugioh, Pokemon, Munchkin (Even though that’s more CCG than anything else).

Q: What sets Kaiju Deep apart from other TCGs?

A: For me personally it’s the range of Kaiju Monster collectability.  One of the most important parts of this project for /me/ was to be able to get my characters out into the world. Players will be able to recruit their favorite Kaiju Monsters to protect their city.  Kaiju come in five different ranks from 1 to 5.  Rank 1 Kaiju start off weak in the game but grow stronger turn after turn.  This scales up to rank 5 Kaiju that come out the game strong right out the gate! Players get to strategize what combination of Kaiju are best to protect their city!

Q: How did you come up with the name Kaiju Deep?

A: Honestly I was influenced by those random manga comic name generator memes back in the day.  It’s hysterical how accurate they are in creating the best names.  I wrote a bunch of random words and while watching Pacific Rim the name came together and I was like eureka this is it!

Q: How long have you been working on the game?

A: I’ve been working on Kaiu Deep for a few years as a comic which is why I already have so much material.  The game functionality has been a slower process which I’ve been testing and refining for at least the past two years.  I’m currently working on a revision that I hope smooths out gameplay and will go back into beta testing again soon.

Q: What is the illustration/design process like?

A: This is the easiest part for me! I literally rapid prototype hundreds of Kaiju. I’ll include some of my test sheets for you to share with your followers. I open a clean slate in Clipstudio paint and either:

  1. Draw shapes and create Kaiju from those shapes

  2. Ask people online for idea prompts

  3. Free draw and let my hand do what it wants. I usually get the best Kaiju this way!

Q: When will the game officially be released?

A: I think we’re probably a year or so away from an official release. During beta testing we found some cards that needed tweaking and some language needed to be cleaned up. We are however starting to release promo cards for the game! First to be distributed at Collect-a-con Dallas/FT Worth May 6th-7th.

Q: What are your future plans for Kaiju Deep?

A: I have a few expansions already pre-planned and one of my main goals is to spin the TCG into a miniature wargame. I have already test printed Kaiu in resin printing from 3d models i’ve made. I'll also be creating a Patreon where players will be able to get unique Kaiju, Building Cards, Event and Attack cards!

Q: Will you be at any upcoming conventions?

A: I will be at Dallas/Ft Worth Collect-a-con wearing a Kaiju Deep black t-shirt. I’ll have with me 300 limited edition Pterrax promo cards to give away!

Q: Do you have any advice for someone looking to make their own TCG?

A: Make the game that speaks to YOUR heart! Don’t let anyone tell you it’s too similar to something else. Everything is derivative of something else. As long as you are not clearly ripping someone off, follow your own path. Make the game of your dreams that makes YOU happy! When you pour your own joy and passion into something people can tell! If there was only one path to making a successful game everyone would do it! Clearly there isn’t so blaze your own trail and do what you want!

I spoke with the creator of Neo Gambit- here are his answers to my questions: Q: Please describe your trading card game! A: NeoGambit is a fast paced and easy to play deck building combat TCG. Q: What inspired you to create a TCG? A: This came from a dream. I woke up from a nap and had dreamt of this fun TCG, reminded me of how much fun I had as a kid play card games. A simple fun TCG that literally anyone can play. Q: What TCGs did you grow up playing as a kid? A: My earliest memories are intertwined with TCGs, there wasn’t a moment in my childhood that I didn’t collect cards. Yugioh and Pokémon have been in my life as long as I can remember. TCG Interview #90: Ward (Part 2)

I did a follow-up interview with Ward TCG, here are their answers to my questions! Q:  What’s new with Ward TCG since our previous interview? A: A lot has happened in the year since our last interview. Ward has hosted a dozen tournaments with great turnouts, lots of action, and many new players.    We have attended several conventions with the most recent being the HUGE Midwest gaming Classic in Milwaukee WI. The original actors from resident Evil 1 video game hung out at our booth for a while and were enamored with Ward.    We are in about 2 dozen stores, including a partnership with a Midwest convenience store chain “Luckey Seven”. They fell in love with Ward and have begun to spread it in their 37 stores across the Midwest.    We were invited to be on several interviews with ABC News. They also loved Ward and wanted to help promote an upcoming tournament we had in Minneapolis MN at that time. Being on Live TV was very nerve racking. We were also hos...
