TCG Interview #48: Splatterkins

I spoke with AcyFaust, creator of Splatterkins- here are her answers to my questions!

Q: Please describe your trading card game!
A: Splatterkins is a family-friendly TCG based around artistic creations made of paint and ink. Each Player chooses a Visionary to play as, summoning Splatterkins to battle and protect the realm known as Tempera.

Q: What inspired you to create your own TCG?
A: I've always loved TCG growing up and half the time I didn't even know how to play, I just collected the cards because of the beautiful work selected for each one. Just last year I've started doing artwork for other indie tcgs and wanted to create something that truly was my own from the ground up! In a way, it's like my own artistic journey and I'm thrilled to share it with the world.

Q: What TCGs did you grow up playing as a kid?
A: I played Magi Nation! Later on in life I learned how to play Magic the Gathering, Force of Will, and Yu-gi-oh. I didn't have many friends who played TCGs growing up but it didn't stop me from loving card games.

Q: What sets Splatterkins apart from other TCGs?
A: The game focuses on the aspect of art. Your deck is called your Sketchbook and when you play a Splatterkin, it starts out wet - like paint! -  and has to dry on the Drying Rack before you can fight with it. Your resource is Inspiration and not only does your Visionary have their own, each Splatterkin has a different starting amount ranging between 1-4 that acts as both their attack, health and resource. There's also a way to evolve certain Splatterkins, which is known as a Revision. This allows Original Splatterkin to become stronger, breaking the cap of 4 for their Inspiration and possibly get to 8. It makes them a force to be reckoned with! Depending on how you play the game, games can go by really quick or take awhile. The gameplay was made with kids in mind so there is a simple back and forth with attacking and for more veteran players there is the Techniques and Talents aspect of the game that can shake things up.

Q: How did you come up with the name Splatterkins?
A: What does paint do? It splatters! So Splatter + kins was beyond fitting! It helps tie into the artistic nature of the lore of the game too. Plus it's super fun to say and I'd like to think it's unique as well!

Q: How long have you been working on the game?
A: I've been working on Splatterkins since 2022!

Q: What is the illustration/design process like?
A: CHAOS! Haha, no, not really! I usually have an idea in mind and just start drawing and see where my inspiration takes me. Sometimes designs come really easily and other times I end up redrawing a Splatterkin or Visionary a few times before settling with the final look. The hardest part for me, but also the most exciting, is choosing the colors for everything. I love coming up with color schemes for each design and try to tell a little story with them in their own right! Since there's the 5 major Colorways, and two additional ones, keeping the Colorway in mind when picking colors out is key. I want people to get inspired when they see the designs whether they're an artist or not. I would love to see people have their own favorite Splatterkin or Visionary!

Q: What are your future plans for Splatterkins?
A: I would love to illustrate a little magna or work on a small mobile game for Splatterkins. First I have to learn how to do the latter but that's all in the far future. There's a lot of things I'd love to do but primarily getting the game out there is the first goal.

Q: When will the game officially be released?
A: The game will be released soon with two decks available. The game isn't being released in traditional methods of booster boxes, decks, and booster packs, but will start with two decks first and will grow and expand from there with additional decks and booster packs. One day, when Splatterkins grows as a community and the demand is there, booster boxes and additional things will be added to what people can purchase and enjoy!

Q: Will you be at any upcoming conventions?
A: Unfortunately I will not be attending any conventions this year. I plan on starting smaller and more local and building a community before branching out to cons! I'd love to go someday!

Q: Do you have any advice for someone looking to make their own TCG?
A: You don't need to become the next overnight sensation of TCGs! I see a lot of creators end up feeling less validated because they don't have as many followers, likes, or people playing their game as others out there. Not every game is going to click with the masses but you can't give up. If you truly are creating a TCG because of your passion for games and want to share your ideas with the world - go for it! It takes time to build a player community, let alone a social one! Just keep at it and at the end of the day as long as you are happy with your game, it was worth it in the end.

TCG Interview #90: Ward (Part 2)

I did a follow-up interview with Ward TCG, here are their answers to my questions! Q:  What’s new with Ward TCG since our previous interview? A: A lot has happened in the year since our last interview. Ward has hosted a dozen tournaments with great turnouts, lots of action, and many new players.    We have attended several conventions with the most recent being the HUGE Midwest gaming Classic in Milwaukee WI. The original actors from resident Evil 1 video game hung out at our booth for a while and were enamored with Ward.    We are in about 2 dozen stores, including a partnership with a Midwest convenience store chain “Luckey Seven”. They fell in love with Ward and have begun to spread it in their 37 stores across the Midwest.    We were invited to be on several interviews with ABC News. They also loved Ward and wanted to help promote an upcoming tournament we had in Minneapolis MN at that time. Being on Live TV was very nerve racking. We were also hosted by PBS for a short segment cal

TCG Interview #12: Neo Gambit

I spoke with the creator of Neo Gambit- here are his answers to my questions: Q: Please describe your trading card game! A: NeoGambit is a fast paced and easy to play deck building combat TCG. Q: What inspired you to create a TCG? A: This came from a dream. I woke up from a nap and had dreamt of this fun TCG, reminded me of how much fun I had as a kid play card games. As a kid I spent hours playing games, but mostly alone, a lot of rules and effects for cards were off putting to others around me. So from my dream, NeoGambit was birthed. A simple fun TCG that literally anyone can play. Q: What TCGs did you grow up playing as a kid? A: My earliest memories are intertwined with TCGs, there wasn’t a moment in my childhood that I didn’t collect cards. Yugioh and Pokémon have been in my life as long as I can remember. I collected both Pokémon and yugioh for over 15 years. I also collected other TCGs over the years, my favorite being chaotic, I’d say that’s where most inspiration for the gam

I spoke with the creator of Nexvs- here are his answers to my questions: Q: Please describe your trading card game! A:  Nexvs Card Game is a two-player game designed to be compact, portable and fast paced but at the same time holds enough  strategic depth to have great games every time! In this game you will only need your 50-card deck, no extra deck, counters   or dice. The game board is easy to catch up and you can learn the rules in no time! With a space fantasy theme, through  Nexvs we will be able to explore many worlds, stories and characters!   Q: What inspired you to create a TCG? A: I've always liked to imagine sci-fi and fantasy stories since I was younger, so I began writing my own stories for fun!  Eventually I wanted to tell those stories through comics and games, but inside me there was a hidden passion for card  games that I didn't know about! My first inspiration was probably Digimon, but the 1999 card game through Digimon Tamers.  I wanted to make them just tr
