TCG Interview #59: Pangaea

I spoke with the creator of Pangaea TCG! Here are their answers to my questions:

Q: Please describe your trading card game!
A: Pangaea TCG is a trading card game, centered around dinosaurs. It’s a 1v1 card game, where each player chooses a Legendary Dinosaur (also your decks health points) - each of which, has a board buff. They then battle each other, combining dinosaur abilities, action cards and game changing event cards, to become the Top Legend. The game combines a level of fantasy to tell stories based around scientific facts and the fossil discoveries of today.

Q: What inspired you to create your own TCG?
A: I am a huge Paleo-nerd. I have considered even going back to school for Paleontology. When I was a kid, my first choice wasn’t Pokémon cards… I wanted dinosaur cards, but there weren’t any on the market. The idea came to me last year when rediscovered my love for Dinosaurs and this began my passion project, Pangaea.

Q: What TCGs did you grow up playing as a kid?
A: Pokemon and Yugioh mainly. I did local tournaments for Yugioh, which was a lot of fun!

Q: What sets Pangaea apart from other TCGs?
A: I think one of the big things is that we tie in real life with these cards and concepts. Recently, our community figured out that our Warden card, linked directly to “Sue” the Tyrannosaurus Rex, from the Chicago Field Museum. Gameplay wise, I love that the game uses “Event” based cards that span over multiple turns to either turn the tides or possibly seal the deal.

Q: How did you come up with the name Pangaea?

A: Pangaea is the Super Continent from prehistoric times, so it seemed fitting for a dinosaur TCG!

Q: How long have you been working on the game?
A: From concept to present, 16 months.

Q: What is the illustration/design process like?
A: My goal was to stay true to these creatures. In my artwork for the game, I use fossil references. When it comes to art done by the other artists we work with, I give them artistic freedom to display their personal styles and it gives a good mix. Some are scientifically correct, with feathers and details, others are animated and some are just straight up, classic JP. Overall, the design process has come a long way at since our sample set and we are super happy with it. While the process is long and can be extensive, it’s pretty rewarding.

Q: When will the game officially be released?
A: We are aiming and on track, to release a Kickstarter in Fall/Holiday season of 2023, the goal is to have 4 themed decks and a full base set ready by then. Complete with finalized gameplay and dipping into the story.

Q: What are your future plans for Pangaea?
A: Future plans, to grow our community more and release a unique game that ties in the real world. I have future set ideas and concepts, that I would love to bring into the hands of players and collectors alike.

Q: Will you be at any upcoming conventions?
A: We just wrapped up at Dallas, right now we are considering our options for future conventions, one of which is Houston CAC.

Q: Do you have any advice for someone looking to make their own TCG?

A: Do it from the heart and don’t burn yourself into the ground. Research, research, research. Get a good support system and don’t be afraid of constructive criticism.

I did a follow-up interview with Ward TCG, here are their answers to my questions! Q:  What’s new with Ward TCG since our previous interview? A: A lot has happened in the year since our last interview. Ward has hosted a dozen tournaments with great turnouts, lots of action, and many new players.    We have attended several conventions with the most recent being the HUGE Midwest gaming Classic in Milwaukee WI. The original actors from resident Evil 1 video game hung out at our booth for a while and were enamored with Ward.    We are in about 2 dozen stores, including a partnership with a Midwest convenience store chain “Luckey Seven”. They fell in love with Ward and have begun to spread it in their 37 stores across the Midwest.    We were invited to be on several interviews with ABC News. They also loved Ward and wanted to help promote an upcoming tournament we had in Minneapolis MN at that time. Being on Live TV was very nerve racking. We were also hos...
