TCG Interview #76: Comic Wars

I spoke with the creator of Comic Wars! Here are his answers to my questions:

Q: Please describe your trading card game!
A: The Comic Wars Trading Card Game is designed to be like a retro fighting game just without all of the buttons or joystick. Players pick the Character that they want to fight as, build a deck that matches their play style, and battle against at least one other player.

Q: What inspired you to create your own TCG?
A: As a kid, my friends and I created dozens of different games, but our TCGs were the longest lasting by far.

Q: What TCGs did you grow up playing as a kid?
A: I mostly played Yu-Gi-Oh!, but I dabbled in Magic the Gathering and Pokemon.

Q: What sets Comic Wars apart from other TCGs?
A: Players can face each other with the same deck and will both utilize it differently. The game is designed to make unique gameplay and strategies more common and bring skill and knowledge to the table as the actual meta rather than a focus on the cards themselves.

Q: How did you come up with the name Comic Wars?
A: My game is meant to be like a multiversal roster much like the game M.U.G.E.N. since artists and brands can choose to add their ideas, concepts, and products into the game; however, this is heavily monitored since the game is geared for ten years old and up.

Q: How long have you been working on the game?
A: I created the first concept back in 2015 shortly after I started creating comic books under the business name, Crow Works Comics.

Q: What is the illustration/design process like?
A: I like to start out with the simple process of creating the cards in word format first and follow a rough to final draft process. After that, I draw out the cards that I would like to illustrate or pay other artists to illustrate specific cards. So far, there has only been one card that I delegated to an artist and that was to my daughter. This next set there are nine cards that I delegated. I am adamantly against using A.I. to create art for my products.

Q: When will the game officially be released?
A: Comic Wars officially released a few years ago under my old business name, but was re-released this year after a two year hiatus due to my former business partner and I parting ways. In fact, the next set, S4R vs. T.I.C.K., will officially release on July 15th this year.

Q: What are your future plans for Comic Wars?
A: I have a few years planned out already with tons of new archetypes and mechanics.

Q: Will you be at any upcoming conventions?
A: Unfortunately, this year I haven't found any conventions that I will be able to attend so far, but I know next year I'm aiming to be at a few with Kumouricon and Rose City Comic Conbeing the biggest ones I have my eyes on at the moment.

Q: Do you have any advice for someone looking to make their own TCG?
A: Keep practicing your craft, stay motivated, and always focus on your dream.

TCG Interview #90: Ward (Part 2)

I did a follow-up interview with Ward TCG, here are their answers to my questions! Q:  What’s new with Ward TCG since our previous interview? A: A lot has happened in the year since our last interview. Ward has hosted a dozen tournaments with great turnouts, lots of action, and many new players.    We have attended several conventions with the most recent being the HUGE Midwest gaming Classic in Milwaukee WI. The original actors from resident Evil 1 video game hung out at our booth for a while and were enamored with Ward.    We are in about 2 dozen stores, including a partnership with a Midwest convenience store chain “Luckey Seven”. They fell in love with Ward and have begun to spread it in their 37 stores across the Midwest.    We were invited to be on several interviews with ABC News. They also loved Ward and wanted to help promote an upcoming tournament we had in Minneapolis MN at that time. Being on Live TV was very nerve racking. We were also hosted by PBS for a short segment cal

TCG Interview #12: Neo Gambit

I spoke with the creator of Neo Gambit- here are his answers to my questions: Q: Please describe your trading card game! A: NeoGambit is a fast paced and easy to play deck building combat TCG. Q: What inspired you to create a TCG? A: This came from a dream. I woke up from a nap and had dreamt of this fun TCG, reminded me of how much fun I had as a kid play card games. As a kid I spent hours playing games, but mostly alone, a lot of rules and effects for cards were off putting to others around me. So from my dream, NeoGambit was birthed. A simple fun TCG that literally anyone can play. Q: What TCGs did you grow up playing as a kid? A: My earliest memories are intertwined with TCGs, there wasn’t a moment in my childhood that I didn’t collect cards. Yugioh and Pokémon have been in my life as long as I can remember. I collected both Pokémon and yugioh for over 15 years. I also collected other TCGs over the years, my favorite being chaotic, I’d say that’s where most inspiration for the gam
