TCG Interview #77: Sacred Realms

I spoke with the creator of Sacred Realms! Here are his answers to my questions:

Q: Please describe your trading card game!
A: Sacred Realms is a groundbreaking trading card game that takes the genre to a whole new level. Imagine a game where every turn is filled with suspense and unpredictability. That's exactly what Sacred Realms offers with its ingenious use of a D20 dice. On each turn, players must roll the dice to determine the fate of their cards. Will a lucky roll activate powerful abilities? Or will a bad roll lead to unexpected consequences? The thrill of the dice roll adds a unique and exciting element to the gameplay, making every match a thrilling experience.

Q: What inspired you to create your own TCG?
A: The inspiration behind creating my own trading card game, Sacred Realms, was born out of a simple hobby that quickly transformed into a deep passion. As I worked on the game, I found myself constantly exploring new ideas, refining mechanics, and designing captivating artwork. The drive to bring something fresh and engaging to the TCG community fueled my journey, and Sacred Realms is the result of that unwavering commitment.

Q: What TCGs did you grow up playing as a kid?

A: As a kid, one TCG captured my imagination like no other: Magic: The Gathering. Its intricate gameplay, strategic depth, and endless possibilities shaped my love for the genre. Drawing inspiration from such a renowned game, I set out to create Sacred Realms as a tribute to the TCGs of my childhood while infusing it with my own innovative twists.

Q: What sets Sacred Realms apart from other TCGs?

A: What sets Sacred Realms apart from other TCGs is a combination of factors. Firstly, it has a strong community focus. Building a thriving and supportive community is at the heart of the game, fostering friendships, and creating a space for players to connect. Secondly, the unique art style of Sacred Realms sets it apart visually, immersing players in a rich and vibrant world of magic. Lastly, the utilization of a D20 dice to activate abilities adds an element of chance and unpredictability that distinguishes Sacred Realms from other TCGs on the market.

Q: How did you come up with the name Sacred Realms?
A: The name Sacred Realms emerged from the lore and world-building of the game. In Sacred Realms, multiple realms of magic coexist in harmony until a cataclysmic event causes their convergence, resulting in the birth of the Sacred Realms. This name encompasses the vast possibilities and mystique of the game's universe, where players take on the role of powerful sorcerers striving to restore balance and order.

Q: How long have you been working on the game?
A: I have dedicated approximately one year of hard work and dedication to developing Sacred Realms. During this time, I focused on refining gameplay mechanics, designing captivating illustrations, and playtesting the game to ensure a polished and enjoyable experience for players.

Q: What is the illustration/design process like?
A: The illustration and design process of Sacred Realms is a labor of love. Initially, I used colored notecards to represent different element types and sketched directly on them for the first playtests. As the game progressed, I leveraged my design expertise to create a cohesive card template in Photoshop. Now, all illustrations and designs are meticulously crafted by me, ensuring a consistent and visually stunning aesthetic for the game.

Q: When will the game officially be released?

A: Sacred Realms is set to be officially released very soon! I have already completed 200 cards and have begun printing physical copies to distribute in local shops. Additionally, I have launched a Kickstarter campaign to reach a broader audience and share the magic of Sacred Realms with enthusiasts worldwide.

Q: What are your future plans for Sacred Realms?

A: The future of Sacred Realms holds exciting prospects. I am passionate about expanding the game's universe by introducing new "realms" of magic and creating captivating expansion packs. As the game grows, I will continue to nurture the community, listen to player feedback, and enhance the gameplay experience with new mechanics and content.

Q: Will you be at any upcoming conventions?
A: Absolutely! I plan to attend the Folsom ren faire in September, where I'll showcase Sacred Realms and connect with fellow enthusiasts. Additionally, I am actively exploring conventions in the San Francisco and Sacramento areas to engage with a broader audience and share the excitement of Sacred Realms.

Q: Do you have any advice for someone looking to make their own TCG?
A: If you're aspiring to create your own trading card game, my advice would be to stay positive and embrace the journey. Starting the process can feel daunting when you realize the multitude of tasks ahead. However, by breaking it down into manageable steps and staying determined, you can overcome any challenges. Remember, if you have the passion and drive to make your TCG a reality, it will undoubtedly come to fruition. Stay focused, stay inspired, and enjoy the ride!
