I spoke with the creator of Raid! Here are his answers to my questions:
Q: Please describe your trading card game!
A: Raid TCG is a trading card game where two players try to raid each other’s trophy. They face each other by battling their creatures, placing structures and using every useful item they can get their hands on. In a game of raid, strategy is key. Improvising skills are essential too, because storm cards can shake up the whole playing field!
Q: What inspired you to create your own TCG?
A: In school I was always doodling in notebooks and really enjoyed making weird creatures and what not. I wanted to make a product out of all these ‘loose’ doodles and thought a TCG would be the best fit!
Q: What TCGs did you grow up playing as a kid?
A: When I was in the Netherlands, I played a little Pokémon. I loved collecting and trading the cards too. In Italy, Yu-Gi-Oh, is a lot more popular, so I have some Yu-Gi-Oh experience (but not much). Later on, I also really enjoyed Pokémon: TCG online.
Q: What sets Raid apart from other TCGs?
A: Raid TCG is different from other TCGs, because of its endless possibilities. There are a tons of card combo’s and strategies to get ahead in a game of Raid. And these possibilities will increase exponentially as Raid TCG gets more cards!
Q: How did you come up with the name Raid?
A: Actually, thinking of the name Raid was pretty easy. I started by describing the game just like I did in the first question. Then I Tried to find the one word that sums it all up. Since Raid is the best one-word description for my game, I accept it as its name!
Q: How long have you been working on the game?
A: I Graduated 3 years ago, so I probably had been doodling Raid-creature’s years before that. But I officially decided to make Raid TCG in 2019. The game was available on The Game Crafter two years later, in 2021. Since then, I had a lot of other projects on my mind, but I have recently started the making of Raid TCG set 2!
Q: What is the illustration/design process like?
A: When I design a new creature, item or structure, the idea most likely came from a doodle in a notebook. The next step for me, is to make a detailed sketch. After that I make all the lines of the artwork. Then I colorize the different planes in one plain color. When the entire artwork has its basic colors, I will go over every plane again to add the shade and light. At last, when I feel happy about the appearance of the item/creature/structure, I make a subtle background to complete the artwork.
Q: What are your future plans for Raid?
A: I accidentally already mentioned that I will be making a set 2 for Raid TCG. I made about 10 cards yet, for the second set of Raid TCG. Currently I am also working on merchandise for Raid that will probably be available late this year.
Q: Will you be at any upcoming conventions?
A: Unfortunately, I will not be coming to any upcoming conventions.
Q: Do you have any advice for someone looking to make their own TCG?
A: The thing with creating a TCG, is that you can start anywhere. You can begin by making the rules, the art or even the backstory. There are no limits so really try to express yourself into your game and make it unique. So, if you choose any starting point and follow your creative head, the next steps will become clearer and your game will unravel.
