TCG Interview #84: Boundless

I spoke to the creator of Boundless! Here are his answers to my questions:

Q: Please describe your trading card game!

A: A multiplayer spirit-slinging experience where players reach their fullest potential in a battle for control over the distant planet, Adyta! Choose a Savior to fight by your side, construct an army of Forms for your Spirits to inhabit, unleash Commands to further your strategy and watch as your power soars to unimaginable heights! Revised base set Kickstarting in November 2023.

Q: What inspired you to create your own TCG?

A: I was an avid trading card gamer for many years. My game of choice for competition was Yu-Gi-Oh! and I frequented events. When the pandemic hit, the lack of events weighed on me and I was forced to play the game from my desktop. It wasn’t long before I dabbled into making my own custom cards for Yu-Gi-Oh! and playing them against others who had done the same. Through that experience, I recognized that balancing cards was a skill that many did not have, which frustrated me. Those frustrations led me to a conversation with my brother-in-law, who told me I should just make my own game. That statement opened my eyes to my real problem, the lack of a proper creative outlet, while simultaneously providing the solution. The rest is history.

Q: What TCGs did you grow up playing as a kid?

A: Yu-Gi-Oh!, Cardfight!! Vanguard, Magic: The Gathering, Force of Will, Dragonball Super, and more recently Digimon! Looking forward to adding more indie games to my list as well as some of the newer mainstream ones

Q: What sets Boundless apart from other TCGs?

A: The overall design of Boundless is a well-versed orchestra of the greatest game mechanics to grace the table, but the most distinguishing factor is easily the game’s resource system: Spirits. Unlike typical mana based systems, Spirits allow for a very open-ended design space. Some activate their effects when a certain game condition occurs, some only grant abilities to Forms once the Spirits are placed underneath them, but all of them aid the player’s Savior in unlocking the game’s namesake, the Boundless State.

Q: How did you come up with the name Boundless?

A: Boundless is a very lore-intensive game. Almost everything about the game, from the cards and characters all the way down to the mechanics, is drenched in the deep backstory of Adyta. The name of the game is derived from the mysterious “golden gem” that supposedly grants the wielder an incomprehensible level of power. Read up on Boundless lore through our various social media pages! We’ve got 2 short stories out on our Instagram as well as multiple independent card lore posts!

Q: How long have you been working on the game?

A: This game has been in development since late 2021. Game concepts were finalized in September, art production began in October, and the game launched its starter deck Kickstarter campaign in early 2022!

Q: What is the illustration/design process like?

A: Mark (aka Cuevas_Kun) is our Lead Artist and boy does his work truly shine. Mark practically built the entire aesthetic of Boundless through his unique sketchbook style of illustration. As for design, that falls on me, Zak (aka ZiLLa). For most illustrations, I provide Mark with a short description of what I’m looking for and he works his magic.

Q: When will the game officially be released?

A: The game is out and ready to play now through various test print products and our official dual starter deck product, Epic Battle Box 01. Check out the various forms of Boundless products on our official site, https://www.boundlesstcg.com !

Q: What are your future plans for Boundless?

A: The next step is to release Epic Battle Box 02, the second installment in our dual starter deck product series. Afterwards is the launch of the Mega Genesis Kickstarter in November 2023, the release of Epic Battle Box 03, our first side set (Legendary Guardians: Galactic Travellers) and the second booster set, “Malevolent Blast”. The future is bright for Boundless!

Q: Will you be at any upcoming conventions?

A: We’ve taken a break from conventions for the year of 2023 while we work on getting more product in hand. The goal is to attend more conventions in 2024 post-Kickstarter so that we can have our full suite of starter deck and booster box products ready for you all to take home!

Q: Do you have any advice for someone looking to make their own TCG?

A: Don’t give up. I know it’s tough. Sometimes it seems like you’re shouting into the Void, that there’s no real purpose to do this, or that nobody truly cares. YOU care. YOU are the purpose for doing this and YOU are the echo you will hear back from the Void. Create what you feel the world needs. This isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme. If anything, it’s a get-poor-quick scheme. The main contributor to the success of any game is passion. If you have that, giving up will be your greatest regret. Take the small wins. It’s a marathon, not a race. Also, stay Boundless!

TCG Interview #90: Ward (Part 2)

I did a follow-up interview with Ward TCG, here are their answers to my questions! Q:  What’s new with Ward TCG since our previous interview? A: A lot has happened in the year since our last interview. Ward has hosted a dozen tournaments with great turnouts, lots of action, and many new players.    We have attended several conventions with the most recent being the HUGE Midwest gaming Classic in Milwaukee WI. The original actors from resident Evil 1 video game hung out at our booth for a while and were enamored with Ward.    We are in about 2 dozen stores, including a partnership with a Midwest convenience store chain “Luckey Seven”. They fell in love with Ward and have begun to spread it in their 37 stores across the Midwest.    We were invited to be on several interviews with ABC News. They also loved Ward and wanted to help promote an upcoming tournament we had in Minneapolis MN at that time. Being on Live TV was very nerve racking. We were also hosted by PBS for a short segment cal

TCG Interview #12: Neo Gambit

I spoke with the creator of Neo Gambit- here are his answers to my questions: Q: Please describe your trading card game! A: NeoGambit is a fast paced and easy to play deck building combat TCG. Q: What inspired you to create a TCG? A: This came from a dream. I woke up from a nap and had dreamt of this fun TCG, reminded me of how much fun I had as a kid play card games. As a kid I spent hours playing games, but mostly alone, a lot of rules and effects for cards were off putting to others around me. So from my dream, NeoGambit was birthed. A simple fun TCG that literally anyone can play. Q: What TCGs did you grow up playing as a kid? A: My earliest memories are intertwined with TCGs, there wasn’t a moment in my childhood that I didn’t collect cards. Yugioh and Pokémon have been in my life as long as I can remember. I collected both Pokémon and yugioh for over 15 years. I also collected other TCGs over the years, my favorite being chaotic, I’d say that’s where most inspiration for the gam

TCG Interview #9: Nexvs

I spoke with the creator of Nexvs- here are his answers to my questions: Q: Please describe your trading card game! A:  Nexvs Card Game is a two-player game designed to be compact, portable and fast paced but at the same time holds enough  strategic depth to have great games every time! In this game you will only need your 50-card deck, no extra deck, counters   or dice. The game board is easy to catch up and you can learn the rules in no time! With a space fantasy theme, through  Nexvs we will be able to explore many worlds, stories and characters!   Q: What inspired you to create a TCG? A: I've always liked to imagine sci-fi and fantasy stories since I was younger, so I began writing my own stories for fun!  Eventually I wanted to tell those stories through comics and games, but inside me there was a hidden passion for card  games that I didn't know about! My first inspiration was probably Digimon, but the 1999 card game through Digimon Tamers.  I wanted to make them just tr
